ECU's Malone pitches second shutout

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior right-hander Wanda Malone pitched her second shutout of the weekend on Saturday and Desiree’ Nordie hit a solo-homer as the East Central University softball team downed 17th-ranked Abilene Christian 1-0 in the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II Collegiate Classic.

Later in the day, ECU dropped a 1-0 decision to Tarleton State as the Lady Tigers wrapped up play in the classic with a 2-2 record.

ECU blanked 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M; 5-0 on Friday, behind the four-hit pitching of Malone, before dropping a 2-1 decision to host St. Mary’s.

Malone scattered seven hits, allowed no walks and struck out three in going the seven-inning distance and raising her record to 2-0.

Desiree’ Nordie homered with two outs in the bottom of the first for the only run of the contest. In fact, that was the Lady Tigers’ lone hit.

ACU hurler Shelby Hall worked all six innings, allowed the one earned run, walked none and struck out three.

TexAnn pitcher Julie Norris allowed only four hits, walked one and struck out four in getting the win.

Ellen Estabrooks (0-1) suffered the loss as she worked six-plus innings. Estabrooks allowed only one walk and struck out two as she scattered 10 hits. Randee Crockett came on in relief before surrendering a sacrifice bunt and two fly-outs to end the top half of the seventh.
