ECU women fall to Southeastern
ADA — Southeastern Oklahoma State held a huge rebounding advantage and knocked down 24-of-29 free throws in claiming an 82-73 Lone Star Conference North women’s basketball victory over the East Central Lady Tigers Saturday on Wayne Cobb Court inside the Kerr Activities Center.
The Savage Storm held a 52-33 advantage on the boards, including 19 off the offensive glass, and shot 82.8 percent from the line in improving to 16-5 overall and 6-2 in the LSC North.
Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers shot just 39.7 percent from the floor and managed to convert only 8-of-15 free throws in falling to 10-11 and 2-6.
Guards Casi Rawls and Jourdan Clark topped the ECU scoring effort with 18 points apiece as the freshman Clark sank 4-of-5 attempts from 3-point range to go with three assists and three steals before fouling out. Rawls nailed three treys, hustled for eight rebounds and dished out a team-leading four assists.
Also reaching double figures for the Lady Tigers were Krista Bullis and Danielle Cox with 12 each and Indhira Ramirez with 10. Bullis was 4-of-7 from outside the arch to go with a pair of assists and three steals.
Jessica Hesse topped the SOSU with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Kacey Russell (15 points), Elizabeth Dean (13), Nikki Nester (11) and Destiny Brown (10) rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Savage Storm. Brown also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double and Russell collected seven assists to lead the game.
ECU held a 31-30 halftime edge when Rawls swished in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
But SOSU went on a 7-1 run to start the second half, including the first five points.
The Lady Tigers were unable to regain the lead, but did forge a 50-all tie off a Bullis trey with 10:30 remaining.
But the Savage Storm went on to score the next eight points.
The next action for ECU will be Wednesday at home against Texas A&M-Commerce; at 6 p.m. in the Kerr Center.
The men's contest ran too late for press time but a full report will appear in Monday's Ada Evening News.
