ToC a learning experience for Roff
ROFF — Roff coach Kale Simon said his Tigers got a lot out of their three games at the rugged Tournament of Champions in Tulsa last week — a lot they can improve on during the 2010 portion of their schedule.
After entering the week with 12 straight double-digit victories to start the season, Roff lost three in a row in Tulsa, including two by at least 17 points. The Tigers — ranked No. 1 in Class B — started the week with a 72-50 loss to Class 6A power (and eventual tournament champ) Putnam City before losing to Class A No. 1 Garber (51-48) on Tuesday and to 2A No. 1 Pawnee (56-39) Wednesday.
“It was an excellent experience,” Simon said. “The positive is that we know without a shadow of a doubt that we have plenty of things to work on. We’re not where we want to be, and this made it clear to everyone, from coaches down through players, that there’s work to be done.
“It’s a positive going forward that every day we step into the gym there’s a reason we’re there,” he said. “When you say that and you’re winning by 30 or 40 points, the voice isn’t very clear, but those three days should give us some motivation.”
Putnam City (ranked No. 6 in 6A) got 23 points from tournament MVP Dominique Raney (the only returning starter off last year’s state championship squad) and raced to a 16-4 lead after one quarter en route to its easy victory over Roff Monday, but the Tigers took Garber to the final minute and Pawnee to the final quarter before losing.
First Round
Putnam City 72, Roff 50
Raney, who hit a buzzer-beater in the semifinals to stun Tulsa Memorial, 63-62, and had 25 points in his team’s surprising 70-47 blowout of Tulsa Washington in the championship game, led three players in double figures for the Pirates.
Roff sliced a 34-16 halftime deficit to 10 (49-39) after a 23-point outburst (their biggest of the week) in the third quarter, but Putnam City scored 23 of the game’s final 34 points.
Dylan Lemley, who led Roff in scoring in two of its three TOC contests, had 15 points and Brendan McCurry and Dayne Parker added 10 apiece in the loss. Hunter Gibson (12) and Ramonis Lewis (11) joined Raney in double figures for the Pirates.
Loser’s Bracket
Garber 51, Roff 48
Roff led 48-47 when Garber’s Tyler Miller converted a four-point play with 47 seconds left for the game’s final points. Simon called a timeout after Miller’s free throw, but the Tigers couldn’t get off a shot in the final seconds.
McCurry hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, and Parker added 11 for the Tigers, who also got eight points and an impressive effort on defense from senior forward Blake Logan. Simon said the performances of McCurry and Logan were the only real highlights for his team during its three days in Tulsa.
“Brendan McCurry and Blake Logan had a really good second day,” Simon said. “Other than that, we didn’t have anybody perform at a real high level all week.”
Bryce Lamer scored 19 points, Hayden Vencl added 13 and Miller finished with 12 for Garber, which lost to Muskogee, 63-54, in the consolation final Wednesday.
Seventh Place
Pawnee 56, Roff 39
Pawnee led just 35-33 heading to the fourth quarter before exploding for the biggest point total (21) against Roff in any quarter this season.
“We just didn’t play very tough in the fourth quarter against Pawnee,” Simon said. “We didn’t grind it out on the offensive end, and we didn’t make them work on our defensive end.”
Roff raced to a 6-1 lead, and the game was tied at 21-all at intermission, but after keeping it close into the fourth quarter, the Tigers didn’t have a basket in the final eight minutes.
Bryce Beer had 20 points to lead Pawnee, while Lemley (14 points) and Parker (10) were in double figures for Roff. Pawnee did a solid job defensively on McCurry, holding him to just six points (none from beyond the arc) just one day after his huge game against Garber.
Lemley was named second-team all-tournament at the prestigious event.
Roff is off until traveling to Wanette on Friday.
