BRISTOW — Sophomore Jamie Copeland finished first at 103 pounds as the Ada High wrestling team opened its season with a solid sixth-place finish in a tough field Friday and Saturday at the Bristow Tournament.
Copeland, who was used sparingly by AHS coach Kyle Bohannon as a freshman but was undefeated, kept his perfect record intact with his strong showing in his biggest varsity competition to date.
“He’s a talented kid who went out and had a couple of tough matches and really fought hard and came out with a win,” Bohannon said of Copeland. “It was nice to see that.”
Two of Ada’s three state tournament qualifiers from last season — senior Eddie Brown and sophomore Jake Todd — also turned in solid efforts. Brown, fourth in the state at 140 pounds as a junior in his first season of varsity wrestling, was second at that weight at Bristow, while Todd wound up third at 119 pounds.
Jake Todd’s twin brother, Jeb — who finished one victory away from a state tournament spot last year — was fourth at 130 pounds, and senior heavyweight Josh Nail also had a strong performance, finishing fourth. Another sophomore, Conner Keith, wound up sixth at 152 pounds in his first varsity competition ever.
“It’s early in the season and we still have a long way to go,” Bohannon said. “It was a great start, though. This was a tournament to get our feet wet and set the stage for this long haul leading into the regional tournament. We’ve got a lot of improving to do between now and then.”
Bohannon’s squad will be at Durant Tuesday for a three-way with the Lions and Little Axe and will see its first home action of the season Thursday in a dual against Tecumseh. Junior high action begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
The Cougars travel to their second tournament of the season Friday and Saturday in Durant.
