ADA — The Ada Elks Lodge No. 1640 was the host to the Pontotoc County competition of the Elks National Hoop Shoot Contest Saturday at the Ada Junior High.
Boys and girls shot in three different age groups to find the best free throw shooters in the county. The contest is the most made of 25 tries.
In the 8-9 year old girls group, Kendra Hisaw, Latta, and Lindsey Brandt, Homer, were locked in a close battle but in the end, Lindsey took control and took first place with a score of 13 to Kendra’s 12. In the boys contest, Brody Savage, Stratford, took second place shooting 13. Eric Creel of Byng, far out-distanced the field, making 18 to secure first place.
In the girls 10-11 year old bracket, Tana Davis, Stonewall/McLish, easily won second place with a score of 11. Maddison Bacon, Willard, made a strong showing with a score of 15 to secure the gold. In the boys contest, Christian Maloy, Washington, and Cody Mills, Byng, tied for second at 14. In the ensuing five shot tie-breaker, Maloy iced the deal with a prefect 5-of-5 showing. Devin Cooper, Homer, took the first place trophy by one basket — scoring 15 for the win.
In the final contest of the day, Jessica York, Stonewall/McLish, shot a respectable 16 to take second but returning champion, Lauren Trimmer of Roff took first again with a score of 19. The boys contest showed the best shooting of the day with Hunter Capps, Byng, making 20 to capture the silver. The hot hand of the day went to returning champion, Carter Kessinger of Latta with an almost perfect 24-of-25 effort to capture the gold.
Other schools participating but not placing were Ada Junior High, Allen, Pickett/Center and Vanoss.
"We had a strong group of shooters," said Elks representative Tom Hampton. "And Pontotoc County should be well-represented at next month's competition."
The next competition for these champions is the district to be held in Ada on January 2.
