Teams chosen for 2009 All-Star Classic
ADA — Rosters for the 36th annual Ada Evening News All-Star Classic have been finalized after a meeting by the Ada Area Basketball Coaches Association last Wednesday.
The basketball extravaganza is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, at Byng High School’s Bill Koller Field House.
The girls' game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. with the boys' game to follow at 8 p.m. The contests will pit senior players from the East against senior players from the West.
The ever-popular 3-point Shoot Out and Slam Dunk competitions will also be part of the All-Star Classic. Preliminary rounds for those event will take place at 4 p.m. on game day (May 13) inside the Byng High School gymnasium. Those activities are open to any varsity players regardless of classification from the 19 schools that now make up the Ada Area Basketball Coaches Association.
Rosters for the East and West girls' and East and West boys' team were selected last week from senior players from participating AABCA schools.
Members of the East Girls' team include: Shelbey Franz, Taylor Howard and Katelyn Carter of Ada; Danli Mills of Allen; Heather Jones of Calvin; Jennifer Sandmann of Coalgate; Mary Mudd of Holdenville; Shelby Lackey and Tyla Transue of Stonewall and Josie Soukup of Tupelo.
Alternates for the East girls are: Jill Eddings of Coalgate, Kelsey Ingram of Holdenville, and Natosha Babb of Moss.
Michelle Shannon of Ada will coach the East girls.
Members of the West Girls' team include: Shelby Grove of Byng; Molly McQuay, Skyler Jenson and Autumn Lawrence of Latta; Jodie Byers of Roff; Lindsay Heckman of Stratford; Kelli Leveridge of Sulphur; Stefani Burk and Logan Anderson of Vanoss; and Hallea Middleton of Wanette.
Alternates for the West girls are: Kirsten Manuel of Byng, Caitlyn James of Latta and Megan Stewart of Sulphur.
Coaching the West girls is Matt Fike of Byng.
The East boys roster includes: Alex Long and Jarrell Booker of Ada; Trevor Griffith of Allen; Neal Hassler of Calvin; Luke Palmer and Tyler Ennis of Coalgate; Danny Vazquez of Holdenville; Malcolm Casey and Darron Hamilton of Stonewall and Jeremy Stein of Tupelo.
Alternates for the East boys are: Caleb Caudle of Ada, Brent Watkins of Coalgate and Chris Aguirre of Holdenville.
Coaching the East boys will be Taylor Wiebener of Coalgate.
The West boys roster includes: Dakota Abbott and Jared Walker of Byng; Rope Booth of Konawa; Toby Blevins and Brandon Stephens of Mill Creek; Caleb Burrows of Roff; Dakota Russell of Stratford; Whitt Carter of Sulphur; and Kendal Curtis and Zack Scoggin of Vanoss..
Alternates for the West boys are: Dylan Hendricks of Byng, Kaye Shields of Mill Creek and Adam Vanlandingham of Stratford.
The coach for the West boys is Kent Vernon of Mill Creek.
Players for the West teams will wear white or light-colored uniforms on game day while the players on the East will dress in dark suits. All-Star coaches will contact their players to set up at least one practice date.
Any area coach who knows of one of his or her players who will not be able to participate in the All-Star Classic is urged to contact The Ada Evening News or the All-Star Classic coach as soon as possible so a replacement can be named.

ECU women salvage Sunday softball split with Northeastern State
East Central overcame a Northeastern State game-tying two-run homer in the fifth by scoring three runs in the bottom half of that inning to beat the RiverHawks 6-3 and salvage a Lone Star Conference North doubleheader split Sunday at Lady Tiger Field.

MCALESTER — The Konawa Lady Tigers and the Savanna Lady Dawgs got to see each other, but not play one another, at the 2009 Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic over the Christmas break. But as the Class 2A playoff fate would have it, they got to meet Friday night in the area tournament title game for the right to play in this week’s Class 2A State Tournament. Fortunately, for the locals, they made it — but it was not easy.

ADA — The East Central University women’s golf team will launch the 2010 spring season by hosting the ECU-Oak Hills Women’s Collegiate Invitational Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Oak Hills Country Club in Ada.
