ECU soccer team edged by Emporia State

St. Joseph, Mo. — East Central University surrendered a goal in the 20th minute as Emporia State posted a 1-0 women’s college soccer victory over the Lady Tigers Sunday to wrap up play in the Drury Inn Classic.

The two teams were dead even in total shots at 10. ECU actually owned a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, but it was Emporia State which made one count.

Shelley Marsh’s unassisted goal proved to be the difference.

ECU goalkeeper Kelly Davis was credited with three saves while Jennifer Stillmock registered five saves while playing most of the game in goal for the Hornets.

The Lady Tigers (0-2) will play at the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in Chickasha on Friday at 4 p.m. before finally opening the home portion of their schedule on Sunday (Sept. 7) against St. Mary’s (Texas) at 2 p.m.

ECU quarterback Johnson named Offensive Player of the Week

ADA — Despite a season-opening 58-14 loss by East Central University at NCAA Division I Subdivision team Sam Houston State on Thursday night, Tiger junior quarterback Marcus Johnson was named Lone Star Conference North Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Johnson, a 6-1 junior out of Abilene, Texas, completed 31-of-53 passes (58.5 percent) for 296 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. He connected with tight end Thurman Sims on a 6-yard scoring pass and hooked up with Tyrone Gibbs on a 53-yarder for a TD, both in the second half.

Johnson was tabbed as the preseason pick for LSC North Offensive Player of the Year after being named LSC North Offensive Back of the Year in 2007. He broke several school records enroute to that award last year.

ECU (0-1) opens the home portion of its 2008 schedule on Saturday by taking on Texas A&M-Kingsville; at 6 p.m. at Norris Field.
