Southeastern stops ECU rally

DURANT — East Central nearly overcame a 21-point, second-half deficit, but host Southeastern Oklahoma State held on for a 59-56 Lone Star Conference men’s basketball victory over the Tigers Wednesday night at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The Tigers, who fell to 6-14 overall and 1-5 in the LSC North, trailed by a 49-28 margin with 8:29 to go, before outscoring the Savage Storm 28-10 the rest of the way.

Freshman Bobby McAdoo sank two of his 3-pointers, Eric Allen canned one trey, Denarius Darby had a steal for a dunk and the Tigers were a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line during that comeback effort.

ECU had its best free-throw shooting game of the season, converting 14-of-16 attempts (87.5 percent).

However, the Tigers struggled from the field most of the night (30.9 percent) and were out-rebounded by a 42-30 margin. The Savage Storm shot 41.3 percent for the game, but had five more turnovers than ECU (26-21).

Junior guard Terrence Hill paced the Tigers with 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and was 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. McAdoo followed with 11 points while Wayne Andrews and Allen ended up with 10 points and five boards apiece.

SOSU, 8-13 and 3-3, was led by William Slone’s 19 points and nine rebounds. Chris Roussell followed with 12 points and Will Robinson, with three treys, ended up with 11.

Defensively, ECU was credited with 16 steals as Darby compiled four while Andrews, Allen and freshman Jarrett Brandon recorded three each.

The Tigers managed just five first-half field goals (three on a trio of 3-pointers) and 22.7 percent shooting in trailing 29-15 at the break.

ECU and Southeastern will square off again on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center in Ada. It will be ‘Hall of Fame Night’ as three former Tiger athletes — former women’s basketball star Gina Farmer, former cross country runner Daniel Stone and ex-softball standout Leslie Phillips — will be inducted into the ECU Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime.

Cold-shooting Lady Tigers fall at Durant, 74-60

DURANT — Poor shooting and a 13-rebound deficit were too much to overcome as East Central’s Lady Tigers dropped a 74-60 Lone Star Conference North decision to host Southeastern Oklahoma State on Wednesday night at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

ECU, with only16 field goals the entire night, shot just 21.6 percent for the game and fell into an early 15-3 hole. All three of those points came on free throws as the Lady Tigers went scoreless from the field for nearly the first eight minutes of the contest.

A Krista Bullis 3-pointer at the 12:12 mark of the first half was ECU’s first field goal to make it 15-6.

Bullis, a junior guard, was the Lady Tigers’ top scorer with 14. Freshman guard Jourdan Clark followed with 13 points and eight rebounds and junior guard Casi Rawls chipped in 10 points and five boards.

Elizabeth Dean paced the Savage Storm off the bench with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Destiny Brown followed with 13 points and 10 boards and Ashley Hobbs tacked on 12 points.

The Savage Storm shot 34.8 percent for the game and committed 21 turnovers, compared to ECU’s 13. The hosts also owned a 59-46 rebounding advantage.

SOSU’s largest lead was 63-40 with 10:02 to go.

Indhira Ramirez and Emily Holomek each tossed in seven points for the Lady Tigers while Danielle Cox followed with six points and 13 rebounds.

The Savage Storm improved to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the LSC North while ECU dropped to 10-10 and 2-5.

The two teams will do battle again Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center in Ada.
