Tupelo — A 14-year-old Tupelo boy was shot Monday and another teen has been arrested as the alleged shooter.
Authorities are not releasing names because all involved are minors.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed by the Coal County Sheriff’s Department, four juveniles were hanging out together in the Tupelo area when the alleged shooter, a 17 year old, emerged from his residence on Ponderosa Street just southeast of Tupelo with a gun.
He reportedly fired a shot from the weapon — a .22 caliber rifle — into the air and then pointed the rifle at the victim in an attempt to scare him.
Two other juveniles, 15 and 17, reportedly held the victim by the arms while the shooter fired the weapon at the ground. The bullet ricocheted and hit the victim in the torso.
He was taken to Valley View Regional Hospital where he remains. Authorities said his condition is improving.
The shooter remains in custody and Coal County Assistant District Attorney Preston Harbuck said he hasn’t made a decision whether or not to charge the suspect as an adult.
The shooter admitted he fired the shot, but said, “He only meant to scare (the victim).”
