Roaring flames claim warehouse
Ada — A furniture warehouse in downtown Ada was destroyed by fire Monday.
Firefighters were called to the building at about 3:45 a.m. It was originally reported as a dumpster fire but when firefighters arrived, a section of the north side of the building was on fire and not a dumpster.
The building, owned by Rhynes and Rhoads Furniture, was totally destroyed. George Rhoads, co-owner of Rhynes and Rhoads Furniture said the building and its contents were insured and he is not sure if they will rebuild.
“My partner and I have already started discussions about that, we’ll just have to wait and see how the insurance deal works out it and what our options are,” Rhoads said. The cause is under investigation.
Firefighters cut their way through locked doors and attempted to extinguish the fire. Assistant Chief Rick Ross said firefighters had difficulty maneuvering around the furniture stored inside.
Once the fire entered the middle section of the building it set the roof ablaze and engulfed the structure, forcing firefighters to take a “defensive stance.”
Ross said when a defensive approach is called for, firefighters leave the inside and remain at least 30 feet back and concentrate on keeping the fire from spreading to adjoining and nearby buildings.
All Ada firefighters were called in to help battle the blaze and Byng Fire Department responded to Ada to standby in case another emergency occurred.
