Schools raise funds to fight hunger in Oklahoma
The fifth annual Students Against Hunger Food Drive, which benefits the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, kicks off today at 125 schools in 11 central and western Oklahoma counties. The goal of this fund and food drive, which runs Sept. 28 through Oct. 30, is to raise 225,000 pounds of food to feed the hungry throughout the winter.
More than 40 new schools are joining the fight against hunger this year. Non-perishable food and fund donations can be made at participating primary and secondary schools and colleges in: Ardmore, Bethany, Choctaw, Clinton, Coyle, Del City, Duncan, Edmond, Elk City, Enid, Lawton, Lexington, Midwest City, Moore, Mustang, Oklahoma City, Shawnee and Yukon. All donations will be distributed to Regional Food Bank partner agencies, such as local food pantries and emergency feeding programs, in the communities where it was collected.
Last year, 205,000 pounds of food was collected from the student-run food drive, which provided over 160,000 meals to the hungry in 53 Oklahoma counties. Last year, Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School set record-breaking numbers for the third year in a row by collecting 58,857 pounds of food, which provided 45,982 meals.
“Our partner agencies are reporting up to a 50 percent increase in the demand for food,” said Rodney W. Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank. “We need the support from the community more than ever to help fight hunger in our state. Thankfully, schools and communities across Oklahoma are participating in the Students Against Hunger Food Drive to help feed this need.”
Most needed food items include: canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, and rice and beans. Monetary donations are also encouraged. In fact, for every dollar donated to the food drive, the Regional Food Bank can provide seven meals.
The Students Against Hunger food drive is presented by the Oklahoma County Bar Association – Young Lawyers Division, Devon Energy Corporation, Chesapeake Energy Corporation and United Way of Central Oklahoma.
