Ada man builds one-fourth scale racers
Ada — NASCAR racer Sam Hornish Jr.’s car made an appearance at Ada High School on Thursday. Bob Stivison brought the car by as a favor to Ada’s Jim DeLonais who built a quarter scale replica of Hornish’s Mobil 1 Indycar for Stivison.
Quarter scale racing is a quickly-growing hobby among racing enthusiasts. Racers use radio controls to pilot their cars on the quarter scale tracks around the nation. Stivison said the tracks keep track of lap times with transponders built into the cars.
“Basically, they have a wire that runs underneath the track and it’s hooked up to the computer in the control tower. Every time your car goes by, it picks up your reading on your transponder and it’ll keep track of all that information for you.”
Stivison praised DeLonais’ quarter scale cars, which pack quite a punch. Stivison said the cars run about 14,000 RPM. While picking up on the controls is touchy at first, he said others in the sport are quick to help newcomers.
“It’s not that hard to get into it and everybody at the track is super helpful. If you’ve got issues, they’ll come over and say, ‘What do you need?’ or, ‘Hey, I noticed you’re out there driving like this, if you try this, it might work better for you,’” Stivison said. “They actually have a beginners or novice class where you can go out and you’re not out there getting in the fast guy’s way. Plus, you’re more competitive that way and it keeps your interest.”
Stivison said quarter scale racing was a fun and safe hobby for a family outing or just to do on one's own.
“It’s just one big happy family. Everybody’s real good with each other. You go out there, you have a good time, enjoy each other’s company and just go out and race,” Stivison said.
