Allen

ADA — The home of Ruby and the late P.H. Allen was the original site of the first annual Allen Family Reunion in 1969 and it was the location for this year’s Fourth of July reunion as well.

Music was provided by the singing group composed of Jan an Virgil James, Jerry Sellers, Ronnie Miller and his son Brandon Miller. Folks enjoyed the southern gospel style of music before the prayer for the meal to come and “Aunt Ruby” was recognized with flowers and a handmade card for her love and devotion to keeping the family in touch with each other through the annual event. She says “It was Bobby Lee that encouraged me to start this gathering 40 years ago...”, referring to her late nephew Bobby Lee Waters, son of Lena Allen.

Before during and after the auction, the kids jumped on the inflatable bouncer and climbed the inflatable mountain.

Bobby Stuart, Garland, Texas, was assisted as auctioneer by one of the fast talkers in the Allen family ... Freddie Allen of Ada. Funds raised will be used to hold the 2010 Reunion.

The menu repeated from last year, since it is a family favorite: Fried catfish, hushpuppies, and coleslaw. Added to that were french fries, hot links, and hot dogs.

Family members brought fried pies, cookies, cakes, and homemade ice cream to share. Lots of lemonade, ice chest tea, water and soda pop were consumed on the hot Fourth of July day! No seed spitting contests were held however, because the watermelons were seedless.

All branches of the Perry and Annie Allen tree were represented. Those still living are Harold Allen and Sylvia Simpson. Their siblings include the late Henry Allen, J.C. Allen, Ollie Allen, P.
