Seminole shootout

Two deputies shot, killed

Seminole — Two Seminole County deputies were shot and killed Sunday afternoon.

Deputies Robbie Chase Whitebird, 23, and Marvin Williams, 43, were shot to death while attempting to serve a warrant. The man who reportedly shot them, 26-year-old Ezekiel Gilbert Ray Holbert, Shawnee, is in custody.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Public Information Officer Jessica Brown said Holbert’s mother called authorities when she found out he was at her house. His mother was not in the home.

“She found out he was inside there,” Brown said. “He was not welcome so she called Seminole County deputies. They had a warrant for his arrest so they went there to serve it.”

The deputies reportedly told Holbert to come out or they would kick in the door.

A witness to the crime, Bryan Hause, was working at a business next to the home and saw the deputies make their way into the house.

“They kicked it in, once they kicked it in he was sitting there waiting on them,” Hause told reporters. “Shot both of them, one point-blank right between the eyes, killed him. The other one he followed out the door shooting him in the back.”

Whitebird died at the scene. Williams was being taken by Medi Flight to OU Medical Center but died enroute. Police set up a large perimeter around the house and called for any and all law enforcement who could respond to respond.

Officers from more than a dozen agencies — including Pontotoc County sheriff’s deputies — responded to assist in a manhunt. Authorities were not sure if Holbert was still in the house.

At about 7 p.m., Oklahoma Highway Patrol used a robot with an audio speaker to approach the house. Through a PA system on the robot, authorities told Holbert to give up. He came out and surrendered without further incident.

He was taken to the Seminole city jail. During the shootout, a stray bullet hit a bystander in the arm. She was taken to OUMC and treated for the injury.

The arrest warrant for Holbert was for a February charge of domestic assault and battery by strangulation out of Pottawatomie County.

OSBI continues to investigate the matter.
