1 dead, 2 injured in Johnson County wreck
TISHOMINGO — One person died and two others were seriously injured after swerving to miss another vehicle Friday.
The wreck occurred on State Highway 22 about four miles southeast of Tishomingo at 11:30 a.m.
According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Captain Ronnie Hampton, Deborah Louise Cody, 54, Tishomingo, was driving a 2003 Jeep west on S.H. 22.
As she topped a hill, she was met by another vehicle — according to witnesses — which had crossed the center line. Hampton said Cody swerved to miss the other vehicle, overcorrected and the Jeep rolled an undetermined amount of times.
The other vehicle, described only as a white four-door, left the scene, according to witnesses. A passenger in Deborah Cody’s vehicle, 73-year-old Marjorie Cody, Tishomingo, was thrown 147 feet and died at the scene.
Deborah Cody was pinned in the vehicle for 40 minutes before being freed by Tishomingo firefighters using hydraulic prying and cutting tools. She was taken by Lifestar helicopter to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City and admitted in serious condition with internal and leg injuries.
Another passenger, Rebecca L. Jones, 34, Tishomingo, was pinned for 80 minutes before being freed and taken by Air Evac helicopter to OUMC and admitted in critical condition head, internal and external injuries.
“Because the (incident) happened on a hillcrest and the collision began behind (the white car), it is possible (the driver of the white car) didn’t see the accident occur,” Hampton said.
Marjorie Cody was taken to Clark’s Funeral Home in Tishomingo. No one in the vehicle was wearing seat belts, according to Hampton. The incident remains under investigation.
