Hughes County death investigated as murder
Atwood — The death of a man found in a burning car near Atwood Friday is being investigated as a homicide, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
OSBI Spokesperson Jessica Brown said firefighters responded to a car fire in the predawn hours on a county road just south of Atwood. After dousing the flames, firefighters discovered the body of an unidentified male.
Brown said OSBI is not releasing the manner of death pending a medical examiner’s report.
“We are still investigating that,” Brown said. “We have a good idea of what happened, but we want the M.E. to tell us for sure.”
Hughes County Sheriff Houston Yeager said deputies are currently searching for a missing person.
“It does appear right at this time we do have one person that’s unaccounted for and we haven’t been able to find him,” Yeager said.
Yeager said he can’t release the identity of the missing person at this time.
