Jill Byrne to conduct book signing in Ada
ADA — Former Ada resident and author Jill Byrne will be signing copies of her book, “Step on a Crack: Overcoming depression, a memoir,” from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday at Ada Public Library. Copies of her book will be for sale at the signing.
Byrne’s inspirational memoir shows how her indomitable spirit and sense of humor helped her survive childhood neglect, divorces, chronic and clinical depression, a pyschotic episode and a revolving door of therapists.
“I was born depressed and raised imcompetent,” Byrne said. “After 47 years I was cured of both.”
“My mother, Frances, became an accomplished seamstress, determined to do the best she could to help her mid-life baby stand out,” Byrne said. “Fittings were h___, but nothing compared to the sad day on Sunrise Lane when my girth inched past the one-inch waist of Scarlett O’Hara.”
According to recent statistics publsihed by the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 44 million Americans age 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable depressive disorder. Sources with the National Alliance on Mental Illness report a marked rise in the recognition of hte incidence of depression in children and adolescents. Depression is a widespread and growing problem that affects people of all ages, incomes, educaiton levels and social standing.
“There are many intriguing memoirs on the market which depict life struggles that generally reveal extreme circumstances,” said editor Tracy Roberts of Newport Beach, Calif. “Jill’s story is different Reader will identify closely with a life which appeared typical on the outside.”
In “Step on a Crack,” Byrne tells of her recovery and offers hope to millions in America who suffer from depression’s anguish.
Byrne talks frankly about the ups and downs of her life. Much of her book reveals what life in Ada was like during the late 1940s and 1960s. She was born in Ada and graduated from Ada High School. Throughout her book, Byrne mentions many people and places that Ada residents will recognize.
Byrne’s book is available through Wheatmark at www.wheatmark.com, 1-888-934-088, extension 100.
