5 arrested on stolen checks complaint

Ada — Five people were arrested after they allegedly cashed stolen checks.

Detective Kathi Johnston said the checks were stolen from a local business July 17. She said the main suspect, Blayne Dodson, 30, reportedly cashed some of the checks and traded some of the checks for crack cocaine.

July 18, an employee of Culligan Water Conditioning in the 200 block of S. Johnston arrived to find the front door glass of the business broken.

The owner told Sergeant Terry McNeal the cash box was missing.

“I asked her if there was an employee or ex-employee they were having trouble with since this appeared to be the work of someone who knew where the cash box was located,” McNeal said in a report.

She said the only employee she could think of was Dodson. She said his employment had been terminated.

The owner said the cash box contained $190 in cash, several pre-signed checks on the business, keys to every truck on the premises and some other items.

“She said that the day he was let go the cash box disappeared and the crime was never solved,” McNeal said. “She further advised that he had called them twice within the last week wanting his job back.”

Police were later called to First United Bank on Arlington about a man trying to cash one of the stolen checks in the amount of $800. Police obtained a photocopy of Dodson’s driver’s license and bank employees “identified him as the person trying to cash the check.”

The bank did not cash the check and the man left.

Dodson was arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary and obtaining money by fraud. Johnston said Terry Brown, 35, was reportedly with Dodson at the burglary but did not enter the business. He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a felony (second-degree burglary and obtaining money by fraud).

Three other people allegedly involved with the checks were also arrested. Shirley Brown, 37, was arrested on suspicion of obtaining money by fraud and possession of stolen property. Ashley Wilson, 25, and Vanessa Alleman, 30, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a felony (obtaining money by fraud).
