Barnett claims Meacham ‘bending’ the truth

State treasurer campaign heating up as Tuesday’s election nears

ADA — Howard Barnett makes no bones about how he feels about his opponent’s ad campaign for the state treasurer’s post.

“He (Scott Meacham) has basically surprised me,” Barnett, a Tulsa Republican said. “He has made up so many things about me during this campaign. Put simply, these ads are making false claims about my record. He should withdraw the advertisements. They are not distortions or manipulations of the truth. They are total misrepresentations of the truth.”

Barnett said his credibility is at issue.

“In one instance, my opponent tries to tie together two unrelated events that took place nine months apart,” he said. “In another, he misrepresents the proposal of a bipartisan panel and attempts to attribute it solely to me. The other points raised in the ads are inaccurately presented as well.”

Barnett said he is proud of his record.

Former Gov. Frank Keating threw his hat in Barnett’s ring last week.

“Howard’s independent thinking, combined with his professional, civic and government experience, make him the ideal candidate for state treasurer,” Keating said. “I have know Howard a long time and there is no doubt in my mind he is uniquely qualified to serve the people of Oklahoma as state treasurer.”

Barnett served as the former governor’s chief of staff between 1999 and 2003.

“Working side-by-side with Howard, I saw what a dedicated public servant he is,” Keating added. “As secretary of Commerce and director of the Department of Commerce, he saw a need to refocus the department’s efforts to more effectively and efficiently serve its customers, which he successfully accomplished.”

Barnett said Meacham made Oklahomans promises that didn’t pan out.

“The issue is that Meacham promised voters before they went to the polls that the lottery would generate $150 million annually,” he said. “When you look at the first year of the lottery’s operation — from October 2005 to October 2006 — it produced only $68.9 million for education, according to the Oklahoma Lottery Commission, less than half Meacham’s promise.”

Barnett earned a business degree from the University of Tulsa and a law degree from Southern Methodist University. He and wife Billie have been married for 31 years and they have two daughters.

The state treasurer’s race will be decided in Tuesday’s general election. Polls will be open 7 a.m. — 7 p.m.

For additional information, go to Barnett’s Website www.BarnettforTreasurer.com or phone (918) 499-5295.

“I have proven that I have the skills and experience to be Oklahoma’s state treasurer,” Barnett said. “I ask that voters take a look at the facts and select the best qualified candidate.”
