BPW presents scholarship to ECU student

ADA — Ada Business and Professional Women (BPW) recently presented Jaeli Johnson, a freshman at East Central University, a $500 scholarship and a one-year membership in Ada BPW.

The presentation was made by Ada BPW Scholarship Chair Sherri Curry. An honor student and graduate of Ada High School, Johnson is an accounting major with plans to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

“This scholarship will help me achieve so many of my goals," Johnson said. "College is such an exciting experience. I am ready to face it with full speed to further my career and become the CPA I want to be.”

Johnson has worked the last two years as an Administrative Assistant at the Ada Credit Bureau. Ada BPW was chartered Feb. 15, 1926 and has been supporting working women ever since, especially those who are striving to further their education.

Ada BPW meets the second and fourth Thursday at noon at Mrs. B’s, 1004 E. 32nd.

Salvation Army Auxiliary

ADA — Capt. Frankco Higdon joined 22 members of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Salvation Army and their guests as they met Sept. 11 for the first meeting of fall. President Doreen McAlister chaired the meeting and Higdon said prayer before the meal.

A devotional titled “To God Be the Glory” was given by Auxiliary Chaplain Roberta Summers.

Minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer’s report were approved. Special guest Teri Green and Maj. Fran Taylor, both from Divisional Headquarters, were introduced.

The business meeting included a report by the camp fund committee. A total of 30 youth were sent to summer camp for a week each. The Back to School Basics program was able to help several families this year.

The 2009 Silver Tea will be Dec. 4. The craft committee will begin work on the wreaths and centerpieces later this month. The tea will be held in the home of Bart and Sharon Reed on Kings Road.

Higdon gave a report on the Thrift Store. More donations are needed.

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Salvation Army meets the second Friday of each month. Ladies interested in attending and/or joining the group are to contact Capt. Frankco Higdon at 580-332-1377 for more information.

Diamond 'K'

ADA — Ada Diamond ‘K’ Kiwanis Club met July 28 with president elect Dan Zimmerman opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Eldon Billings led prayer.

State Sen. Susan Paddack spoke on volunteer programs and health care. She said 700,000 Oklahomans are uninsured.

Robert Ardiana, president, led the Pledge of Allegiance at the July 21 meeting of Ada Diamond ‘K’ Kiwanis club. Turk Barrett led prayer. Program chairperson was Elvin Jaquess.

John Hargrave, East Central University president, was the speaker. An Oklahoma City attorney, Hargrave grew up in Wewoka and is in the process of moving to Ada. He said grand opening for the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center is scheduled for Sept. 25. He also reported on several other projects at ECU that are nearing completion and discussed ECU’s 100th anniversary year.

Diamond 'K' Kiwanis president Robert Ardiana chaired the Aug. 4 meeting. Elvin Jaquess said prayer and Nancy Cheper, respiratory therapist, was the guest speaker.

She spoke on a medical mission trip to Nicaragua sponsored by first United Methodist Church. This is a program that goes into Nicaragua with a team of medical professionals, physicians, pharmacists and nurses. The team consists of approximately 20 people. They work in a village approximately eight hours from the capital of Managua in the northern mountain area. No other missionary groups go to an area this remote. Most people there have never seen a doctor.

The Catholic Church has a clinic there and the priest covers eight to 15 parishes and keeps track of villagers that need the most care.

Approximately 1,000 patients were seen and medications dispensed to more than 43,000.

The trip is financed by First United Methodist Church missions, and each person contributes $1,000 for his or her part of the trip.



Happy Elders

ADA — Happy Elders of Asbury United Methodist Church met Aug. 11 in the family life center of the church for a covered dish luncheon. Alicun Scott, food demonstration coordinator for the Chickasaw Nation's 'Get Fresh Program', demonstrated how to make a low calorie salad.
